Children sitting side by side in the classroom, the playground and library. All students participating in school games together, going for the ride to the museum or just counting how was the weekend. When disabled children sit side by side with all other children without distinction of any kind, learn to overcome prejudice and become adults who allow everyone to take their place in society, regardless of their color, gender, religious or sexual option by disability or social class. At school, we live a reflection of the future, is a preview of what will be our life outside the school walls. For the inclusion is real, and that actually happens, we must understand and recognize the other, only then can we have the honor of sharing experiences with people different from us.
Unfortunately, many believe in the impossibility of a real and effective inclusive school. But I’ll tell you, it is possible. Our 1988 Constitution guarantees access to all the elementary school, noting that students with special needs, whatever they are, must have specialized care, preferably inside the school, which does not replace the education in regular classes. For an inclusive school requires a pedagogical project based on reflection, highlighting the culture, history and life experiences of their students. The practice should be reviewed and planned for everyone to learn. And how can this be done? Diversifying the program, but bearing in mind that in the end, all students must achieve the same goals. The key word is freedom, students should be free to learn each of its way, according to their conditions and respecting their limitations.
The result of inclusive educational policies proposed in the legal guidelines, national and international. The World Conference on Special Educational Needs which occurred in 1994 in Salamanca, Spain, points out that all children should learn together, preferably in the classes of regular schools, but also ensured the new Law of Directives and Bases of National Education.
Given the above, there arises the need to reassess social and educational development, leading to a new look at the role of training institutions for human resources for the community, thus promoting the formation of professionals capable of including all individuals who were once excluded from the systems educational and labor market.
It is on this inclusive school, that dream real and possible that I intend to share with you in future columns.
